The
Undersecretary for relations with the states of Vatican Secretariat
of State Mgr Camilleri has today received Mrs. Kader to discuss the
latest developments in the Kurdistan Region.
Particularly, at the center of the talks, the evolutions in the
liberation process of the city of Mosul, relations with Baghdad and
the upcoming referendum on the independence of the region. As for
the various religious minorities present in Iraq, Sunni and Shiite
clashes continue, Christians, mostly refugees in the Kurdistan
Region, want to be protected by the Kurdish government, as does
other minorities. For this reason, it is necessary to work towards a
process of real reconciliation between all the different
ethnic-religious components in order to restore peace and stability
in the area. In addition, to the ongoing humanitarian crisis for
nearly two million refugees and displaced persons, there is an
evident problem of reconstruction of villages and mine clearing
operations in the area.
Finally, Mrs. Kader renewed to Mgr. Camilleri to forward the
invitation for the Holy Father to visit the Kurdistan Region because
the Kurdish people need His presence on site, to feel strongly His
support, and believe in a future of peace and brotherhood.
Mgr. Camilleri will transfer the message to the Holy Father, hoping
that violence and discrimination will end as soon as possible.
