Today, Dr. Kader met with Deputy Director General and Central Director for the Mediterranean and Middle East, Minister of Foreign Affairs Giuseppe Perrone, at the Farnesina.
The discussions focused on the situation in the Kurdistan Region, the fight against Daesh, the ongoing humanitarian crisis, and the urgent reconstruction of the areas and cities destroyed by terrorists and liberated by Peshmerga forces. The areas most affected are the city of Shingal and the Nineveh Plain, a predominantly Christian area. Given
the enormous difficulties facing the Kurdistan Region and the lack of support from the central government, which persists in not sending the budget earmarked for the regional government, the High Representative emphasized that the situation has become unsustainable and requires strong international support. This crisis is fueling social tensions within the country and will exacerbate the migration phenomenon toward Europe.
Minister Perrone reiterated the Italian Government's strong commitment to the Kurdistan Region, the fight against Daesh, the ongoing humanitarian crisis, and the normalization of relations with the central government in Baghdad. Furthermore, a Stabilization Fund managed by Germany, of which Italy is a member, has been established, specifically to rapidly mobilize resources to the most difficult-to-liberate areas. The Directorate for Development Cooperation will then plan ways to provide further support to the Kurdistan Regional Government. However, the current priority is repairing and defending the Mosul Dam. The Italian company Trevi and the Italian soldiers deployed there will address this emergency.
