On December 10, Ambassador Hakki Akil visited Minister Falah Mustafa, Head of the KRG's Federal Foreign Office, during his official visit to Italy.
Minister Falah updated the Ambassador on the domestic political situation just months after the September 21 elections, which saw a shift in the political balance. These elections were a resounding success due to the large turnout, but a new government has yet to be formed. Furthermore, relations with Baghdad remain problematic despite the Erbil government's desire to respect the federal constitution in power-sharing and oil revenue sharing, and to establish a transparent system of cooperation with the central government in preparation for a new Iraq and the upcoming elections in 2014.
Minister Falah then congratulated the Ambassador on Turkey's new leadership, Prime Minister Erdogan, who has had the foresight to understand the importance of dialogue and to initiate the process of recognizing the rights of the Kurdish community in Turkey. President Barzani's recent historic visit to Turkey marked a very important moment in relations between Kurdistan and Turkey, which is one of the Regional Government's main trading partners.
