Today, the High Representative of the Kurdistan Regional Government in Italy, Dr. Rezan Kader, met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, HE Min. Emma Bonino, at the Farnesina. Also present were Minister Plenipotentiary Stefano Queirolo Palmas and Councilor Roberto Neccia, diplomatic officials from Office IX of the Directorate General for Political Affairs, responsible for the Middle East and Gulf Countries.
Dr. Kader conveyed greetings to Minister Bonino from President Masoud Barzani and Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani. During the meeting, the main focus was on the Syrian crisis and the sensitive issue of refugees, the majority of whom are families, women, and children. Iraqi Kurdistan has opened its borders not only to Syrian Kurds but to all those in need. Camps have been organized, including with the help of the UN, with funding from UNHCR and UNICEF, but Iraqi Kurdistan is only a small piece of land; Italy alone cannot address all the resulting problems. Furthermore, it is important to consider that winter is approaching and a more stable solution is needed.
Minister Bonino is concerned about the political and humanitarian situation that has arisen. In any case, Italy offers its full and strong support to Iraqi Kurdistan in addressing this emergency; everyone will do their part, and she confirmed that she will do everything possible to support the people.
Furthermore, the two sides discussed the current political and economic situation in Iraqi Kurdistan. It is important to strengthen cooperation between Italy and Kurdistan.
Dr. Kader reiterated the importance of moral support, and Minister Bonino finally reiterated the Italian government's utmost attention to Iraqi Kurdistan from a political, humanitarian, and commercial perspective.
