Today, Dr. Kader was received by the President of the Senate, Piero Grasso, at the Senate. This meeting, attended by Senate Vice President Valeria Fedeli, Senator Lucio Malan, Senator Riccardo Mazzoni, and Senator Paolo Corsini, was aimed at introducing President Grasso to the Intergroup for Solidarity with the Kurdish People, an interparliamentary group that aims to support relations between Italy and the Kurdistan Region in the cultural, social, economic, commercial, and research sectors. Furthermore, the meeting was an opportunity to present to President Grasso a parliamentary motion calling for greater support for the Kurdistan Region, which is experiencing enormous difficulties due to the fight against Daesh, the ongoing humanitarian crisis, and the emergency reconstruction of the areas and cities destroyed by terrorists and liberated by Peshmerga forces. In particular, the areas most affected are the city of Shingal and the Nineveh Plain, a region primarily inhabited by Christians.
Given the difficulties facing the Kurdistan Region and the lack of support from the central government, which persists in not sending the budget earmarked for the regional government, the High Representative emphasized that the situation has become unsustainable and requires strong support from the international community.
President Grasso reiterated the Italian Government's strong commitment to the Kurdistan Region, the fight against Daesh, the ongoing humanitarian crisis, and the normalization of relations with the central government in Baghdad. During his recent visit to the Kurdistan Region, he was deeply impressed by the strong ethnic-religious integration and the solid relationship of friendship and solidarity existing between the Kurdish and Italian peoples. For this reason, this motion must be submitted to all party group leaders in the Chamber for signature.
Dr. Kader thanked President Grasso for his hospitality and for the Italian Government's commitment to the Kurdistan Region, renewing her invitation to visit the Region, consistent with his institutional agenda.
