Today, Dr. Rezan Kader accompanied Minister of Agriculture Abdulsattar Majeed and his delegation to the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), a specialized United Nations agency in Rome, to meet with Assistant Director-General Ren Wang of the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Protection, and officials responsible for water resources, soil, animal health and production, crop production, and agricultural mechanization.
Minister Majeed thanked the FAO for its gracious welcome and the excellent collaboration that exists between the FAO and Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. He expressed his appreciation for the ongoing projects and expressed the hope of strengthening these relations, especially in light of the difficulties the Kurdistan Region is facing. The fight against Daesh, the humanitarian crisis, the central government's failure to send the budget earmarked for the Kurdistan Region, and the drop in oil prices have made the situation unsustainable. The Kurdistan Regional Government requires further support. Within this framework, the Minister identified a series of sectors requiring emergency intervention, such as water resource management and distribution in the Region, water network rehabilitation, reforestation, and food security.
Dr. Wang assured Minister Majeed of FAO's full availability to provide all necessary assistance to the Kurdistan Region, especially during this delicate time of crisis. FAO's commitment will consist of mobilizing the necessary resources to launch additional projects in the indicated sectors and related activities.
