Today, the High Representative of the Kurdistan Regional Government in Italy, Dr. Rezan Kader, met with Minister Luigi Ferrari, currently Diplomatic Advisor to the Minister of Health, Beatrice Lorenzin, at the Ministry of Health in Rome.
The discussions focused on relations between Italy and the Kurdistan Region, the current situation in the Kurdistan Region, the fight against Daesh terrorists, and the ongoing serious humanitarian crisis.
The Italian Government, Dr. Kader emphasized, plays a leading role within the international coalition, both militarily and humanitarianly. However, the situation has become unsustainable due to the lack of support from the central government in Baghdad. The Kurdistan Regional Government is in need, among other necessities, of medicines, hygiene and health kits, and medical assistance for the treatment of wounded Peshmerga both locally and abroad.
The Councilor Ferrari praised the courage of the Kurdish people and their Peshmerga in the fight against Daesh, as well as the Kurdistan Regional Government's welcoming policy toward refugees and displaced persons. He added that, although the Ministry of Health does not have resources to allocate for humanitarian aid, it will exert pressure within the framework of collaborative projects with the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to identify priority areas requiring urgent intervention. Therefore, it would be possible to propose Italian institutions of excellence capable of developing humanitarian interventions on the ground, as well as those adequately equipped to receive and treat wounded Peshmerga on Italian soil.
