His Eminence Archbishop Gallagher Receives Peshmerga Minister Sinjari and His Delegation
Today, His Eminence Archbishop Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States of the Vatican Secretariat of States, accompanied by Archbishop Mauricio Rueda Beltz of the Section for Relations with States, received Peshmerga Minister Sinjari and his delegation, accompanied by the High Representative of the KRG in Italy and to the Holy See, Dr. Rezan Kader.
The discussions focused on the situation in the Kurdistan Region and the progress made on the ground, such as the recent liberation of Sinjar. In particular, Minister Sinjari focused on the ongoing humanitarian emergency in the Kurdistan Region, with approximately 1,700,000 refugees and displaced persons, making the situation unsustainable, given the dramatic economic situation the Region is experiencing.
The KRG's resources are no longer sufficient; without greater support from the international community in terms of humanitarian assistance and economic aid, refugees and displaced persons will flock to Europe. For this reason, Minister Sinjari called on the Holy See to further support the Kurdistan Regional Government in assisting their Christian brothers and the rest of the Kurdish people.
Archbishop Gallagher expressed his appreciation for the enormous sacrifices made by the Region in managing this humanitarian emergency, pledging the Holy See's support to contribute to the restoration of peace and stability in the Region and better living conditions for its people.
