Yesterday, March 11, Dr. Rezan Kader spoke as a keynote speaker at the conference “Restoring Security and Confidence in a Globalized World” at the University of Rome “La Sapienza.”
The conference opened with a greeting from Sapienza University's Pro-Rector, Dr. Francesco Avallone, and Consules President C. Graziano Gallitto. It also featured speeches by prestigious representatives of the academic world and research institutes in the field of international relations.
The conference was aimed at students from various backgrounds interested in taking a mock test for the United Nations entrance exams. A series of in-depth seminars were organized for them on security issues, peacekeeping operations, and global governance to overcome the international crisis.
High Representative Dr. Kader thanked the Rector, President Gallitto, and the organizers for giving her the opportunity to be the keynote speaker at the conference at such a crucial time for Kurdistan. The 25th anniversary of the genocide of the Kurdish people will soon be celebrated, and a commemoration ceremony will be held in Erbil to ensure that such crimes perpetrated against a specific ethnic group are never forgotten, much less repeated. Recognition of the genocide must be a responsible act of the international community, based on respect for the fundamental values of freedom, protection of human rights, and civil and religious tolerance. The Iraqi Tribunal, the Iraqi Parliament, as well as the Swedish, Norwegian, and UK Parliaments, were the first to officially support this campaign, and I therefore urge all national and international institutions to follow their example.
The Kurdish people, who for centuries have fought for self-determination and all the rights enshrined in the United Nations Charter, will always support the spread of peace throughout the world and the defense of democracy wherever it is violated.
The Kurdistan Region is considered an oasis of peace and stability in the Middle East, and despite years of destruction and suffering, it is experiencing a period of political, economic, and cultural flourishing. Twenty-six Kurdistan Regional Government representations have been established abroad. It is a multicultural and multi-religious country that has opened its doors to anyone wishing to visit and offers a myriad of study and work opportunities.
Our political and democratic system is still young and there are many steps still to be taken, but I believe that Kurdistan is on the right path.
