Today, the High Representative of the Kurdistan Regional Government in Italy, Dr. Rezan Kader, met with the Undersecretary of State to the Minister of Justice, the Hon. Gennaro Migliore, at the Ministry of Justice in Rome.
The discussions focused on relations between Italy and the Kurdistan Region, the current situation in the Kurdistan Region, the fight against Daesh terrorists, and the ongoing serious humanitarian and financial crisis. The Italian Government, Dr. Kader emphasized, plays a leading role within the international coalition, both militarily and humanitarianly. However, the situation has become unsustainable, partly due to the lack of support from the central government in Baghdad. The High Representative also raised with Mr. Migliore the issue of recognizing the 1988 Kurdish genocide under Saddam Hussein's dictatorship and the current genocide perpetrated by ISIS terrorists in the relevant Italian, European, and international forums.
The Hon. Migliore stated that it is the duty of all countries to restore peace, guarantee the freedom of every human being, and acknowledge the wrongs inflicted on the Kurdish people, especially since these constitute crimes against humanity. The Kurdish people are a courageous people who have always defended the values of freedom, democracy, and equality for all regardless of ethnic or religious affiliation. Italy plays an important role in the coalition and is seeking to draw increasing international attention to the crisis in Iraqi Kurdistan. It will therefore be its responsibility to raise awareness among the relevant authorities regarding the legal recognition of the Kurdish genocide and to evaluate possible actions that the Ministry of Justice could take directly, for example by initiating interjudicial cooperation between the respective countries.
